Gorgeous Floral Tips & Tricks From a Former White House Chief Florist

A beautiful floral arrangement can mean so much more than being just a beautiful decoration. Especially if those floral arrangements are set in the most prestigious place in the country. Nobody knows that better than former White House Chief Floral Designer, Laura Dowling.

“Flowers can convey every single emotion,” she says. ”But what if we looked at flowers as more than generic emotional expressions or simple decorative ideas, and started looking at them in a totally new light: as a new powerful tool for policy innovation and change?”

After winning a nationwide contest for the role at the White House, Dowling became a floral diplomat, designing beautiful arrangements with important and symbolic cultural significance for everything from visits from foreign leaders to congressional dinners and holiday celebrations.

“At Texwood Shows, we’re always trying to find unique things that you can’t find anywhere else and bring them to life,” says Tony Wood, President, and Founder of Texwood Shows.

“Laura is someone that has actual live experience producing florals for all those incredible events going on in the White House,” says Wood. “That will get anyone’s attention, whether you’re republican or a democrat.

During her six years in the Obama Administration, Dowling’s arrangements provided a personal touch in order to convey respect and honor the White House guests in a very unique way.

For example, Dowling has designed topiaries to look like molecules in order to honor German Chancellor Angela Merkel, as she has a degree in quantum chemistry. Dowling has also created healthy vegetable bouquets for Olympians, with asparagus, carrots, and broccoli, to honor their commitment to healthy lifestyles. That’s just for starters, as she’s designed arrangements for hundreds of White House events.
