There is something about being able to look someone in the eye when negotiating for a project. No one likes to be talked to with a “sales pitch” for something they may not need or want. Homeowners prefer face-face interactions for home projects for enhanced clarity, trust, and relationship building the communications provides. In person contact creates a stronger connection to foster camaraderie that could be the basis for lengthy projects.
In person meetings allow each person to observe the non-verbal body language of the stance, facial expressions, and pace of the conversation to understand if the customer is conveying their perceived project clearly with the scope and timeline in a realistic manner. This conversation can lead to realistic expectations vs misunderstandings or delays.
The customer can ask questions for a deeper understanding of their needs and preferences, while the contractor will be able to offer real solutions and recommendations based on the homeowners vision and budget while actively seeing the product/services offered. Addressing questions upfront demonstrates a commitment to the project strengthening the relationship between the homeowner and the contractor. There will be immediate discussion and a flow of ideas leading to quicker decision-making alleviating costly changes, delays, or possible potential issues.
Face-to face interactions are best for honest communication to build credibility and trust creating a strong relationship that earns respect. Nothing replaces seeing someone’s face, empathy, and understanding of the emotional decisions behind the project by the homeowner. Written communication without a face to face can be subject to misinterpretation with costly mistakes for home renovations.
