Home Organizing and Space Planning Trends for 2027

Do you remember when the trend was to minimize everything in your home? In 2027 the trend is to add more warmth and functional space including dedicated conversation areas, quiet cozy reading areas, and coffee corners.

Storage areas are now in not so obvious spaces-hidden cabinets, custom cabinetry that matches the flow of the home, and integrated stones that don’t stand out. Screen-free zones for quiet times of games, reading, puzzles, headphone music, or just relaxing are simple spaces to just decompose and breathe.

Rooms may be both a guest room and an office. Other rooms may be for exercise, sewing, and other hobbies. This allows for dual function at any time if guests come in to stay.

Would you believe there is now AI powered automation that tracks pantry level inventory?

Let’s start with the kitchen. If you were to divide your kitchen space into different areas of cooking, preparing, cleaning, food storage, and seasonal less frequently used items space that helps create accessibility to the areas you need most by function.

The cooking area is where you store your pots, pans, baking sheets, cooking oils, spices, and cooking utensils around the stove. Have only your essentials in this area for easy access stored by category. Bottom cabinets and deep drawers are an excellent location for heavy pots, pans, mixing bowls, and colanders.

Next is your prepping area or your kitchen countertop space. This flat surface is a magnet for clutter. Clearing them immediately makes the entire home feel cleaner after you have finished eating. Keep your cutting boards, mixing bowls, chef’s knives, measuring cups, and food prep tools within arm’s reach of your largest open counter. A good rule of thumb is to only leave an appliance on the counter if you use it every single day- like a coffee maker. Everything else should be stored inside a cabinet or appliance garage to preserve your functional prep space.

All additional items should be stored inside your out-of-way storage space for non-essentials.

After a meal is prepared and eaten, cleaning up is a priority. Place trash cans, recycling bins, dish soaps, sponges, and microfiber cloths beneath or adjacent to the sink. Keep everyday dishes and silverware in upper cabinets or drawers directly next to the dishwasher for easy unloading.

The pantry and refrigerator are exclusively for storing food and grouped together by meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner), snacks, or cooking/baking. Snacks could be stored in an easy to reach basket on a designated shelf for family.

Less frequently used items such as small appliances, holiday platters, turkey roasters, storage containers, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, and larger casserole pans are considered secondary space stored in area less accessible that your everyday consumable space. Dedicate exactly one drawer or bin to plastic food containers. Pair every lid with its container immediately after washing.

Storage placement should match how often the item is needed. Everyday plates, bowls, drinkware, silverware, and daily cooking utensils should be stored at eye level in easy to reach drawers and cabinets.
