About:

Operation Pets Alive (OPA) is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization striving to elevate Montgomery County to a No-Kill community through innovative programs. Our Adoption, Public Spay/Neuter, TNR and Transport programs:

  • Raise community awareness
  • Reduce the number of dogs and cats that enter our shelters
  • Increase the number of dogs and cats that leave our shelters alive

In the last three years, OPA has adopted more than 3,300 dogs and cats to our local community through our Adoption/Foster program. All are up-to-date on vaccinations, spayed and neutered and are placed in suitable homes. We require all of our animals in our program to be spayed or neutered, when of age, to help reduce the number of unwanted litters in our community. To further help this effort, our Public Spay/Neuter Program offers residents of Montgomery County two low cost options to have their pets spayed or neutered.

For Montgomery County’s feral cat population our TNR Program, traps, neuters (or spays) and returns the cats to their managed colony. These cats are also vaccinated and given any other medical treatment deemed necessary for a healthy and pain-free life. This limits breeding and reduces intake of cats and kittens at our local shelter that will be at a higher risk of euthenasia due to their feral nature. Finally, our transport programs, “Pups on Trucks,” “Flight for Life” and “Puppies and Kittens with Wings,” supplement local rescue efforts by sending “at risk” dogs, puppies or kittens to partnering shelters and rescues in the northeast, and other areas of the country where these transport candidates realize a 99.9% save rate.
